Progressive and Non-progressive Uses of Verbs Exercise


Some verbs are not normally used in progressive (continuous) forms. Some have both progressive and non-progressive forms with different meanings.
This grammar exercise tests your understanding of common progressive and non-progressive verbs.

Verbs Lesson 14

Uses of need Need is used both as an auxiliary verb and as an ordinary verb. As an ordinary verb, need is used in the sense of require. I need help. We need more people to finish the work. I need some more time to decide the question. The auxiliary need is commonly used with not . It is followed by an infinitive without to. You need not wait for me. (NOT You need not to wait for me.) They need not make such a fuss over it. The auxiliary need does not take the marking -s in the third person singular. He need not wait any longer. (NOT He needs not wait any longer.) The auxiliary need is sometimes used with hardly. We need hardly remind you of your promise to visit us. I need hardly add that I am very grateful. The auxiliary need can be used with only. Selfish Friendship Once a cat was caught in a hunter's net. A mouse used to live in a nearby hole. The mouse seeing the cat in the net started playing around the cat. Soon a mongoose came there. He wanted to kill the mouse. As he lifted his head, he saw an owl sitting on a tree trying to catch him. The mongoose went very near the cat's net to save himself. The mouse thought "When the hunter takes away the cat, the mongoose will not spare me and the owl is there to enjoy both of us."
